Ex Equipment Data Collection
The use of powered equipment e.g. electrical, instrumentation, fire & gas, telecommunications in areas where there is a possibility of an explosive atmosphere existing is potentially hazardous. The risk of ignition of an explosive atmosphere by such apparatus is minimised by the special features incorporated by manufacturers in the design of their Ex certified equipment.
TO PROVIDE ASSURANCE ON THE INTEGRITY OF EX CERTIFIED EQUIPMENT IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT EACH INDIVIDUAL ITEM IS INSPECTED, OVERHAULED AND TESTED AT A FREQUENCY WHICH CONFIRMS THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THOSE SPECIAL MANUFACTURED FEATURES ARE BEING MAINTAINED.
International standard IEC (BS-EN) 60079-17 provides information on the inspection and maintenance of electrical installations in hazardous areas and calls for ‘records sufficient to enable the explosion protected equipment to be maintained in accordance with its type of protection’.
IN ORDER TO PRODUCE THOSE RECORDS IT IS NECESSARY TO MAINTAIN A COMPLETE ASSET WIDE REGISTER OF ALL INSTALLED EX CERTIFIED EQUIPMENT.
If the quantity and location of installed Ex equipment is unknown it is impossible to demonstrate legislative compliance, equipment integrity and ultimately asset and employee safety.
A COMPLETE AND UP TO DATE INVENTORY OF ALL INSTALLED EX CERTIFIED ITEMS OF EQUIPMENT IS FUNDAMENTAL TO THE INTEGRITY AND SAFE PERFORMANCE OF EX CERTIFIED EQUIPMENT.
